Young Frankenstein Extends as American In Paris Closes

Young Frankenstein - Garrick Theatre

The latest booking updates in the West End concern two relatively recent additions to the capital, with Young Frankenstein adding new dates to September 2018 and An American in Paris announcing its closure in January.

Both shows opened in 2017 and play in well known West End theatres the Garrick and the Dominion Theatres respectively.

Young Frankenstein needs little introduction. After all, it is one of Mel Brooks’ most famous films and this stage version has only just opened at the Garrick Theatre, so news of a booking extension that takes it to the end of next year is surely a testament to audience response.

The story centres on Dr Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the more famous Victor Frankenstein, who inherits his grandfather’s Transylvanian property and soon takes up his more sinister science experiments. The original film version starred Gene Wilder in the lead role alongside Peter Boyle as the monster and these roles are inhabited by Hadley Fraser and Shuler Hensley at the Garrick Theatre (with other cast members like Ross Noble as Igor and Lesley Joseph as Faru Blűcher).

So, having opened in October 2017, Young Frankenstein is now booking at the West End’s Garrick Theatre for performances up to Saturday 29th September 2018.

Meanwhile, An American In Paris is set to close its doors when it comes to the end of its current booking period in January. This is despite praise being heaped on the production since it opened in March of this year.

The Gershwin musical, which is based on the 1951 film of the same name, focuses on the character of Jerry Mulligan, an American GI who finds himself in Paris after the Second World War, where he embarks on a new Parisian lifestyle, with friendship and romance on offer. Musical numbers include I Got Rhythm and I’ll Build A Stairway To Paradise, amongst others.

It was also successful on Broadway so its closure is not a sign of a lack of quality, therefore audiences might want to check this out before it closes its doors.

An American In Paris continues at the Dominion Theatre and will close on Saturday 6th January 2018.
