About Hamnet

See Hamnet, the untold tragedy of Shakespeare’s son, at the Royal Shakespeare Company's production now in the West End. Book Hamnet tickets on Box Office.

Warwickshire, 1582 — a gifted healer named Agnes Hathaway and a Latin tutor called William Shakespeare to start a family together. The plague soon tears apart their happy marriage, claiming their young son, Hamnet. Both must confront their loss alone, yet from this experience, something extraordinary emerges.

Adapted for the stage by Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi), Hamnet is a poignant exploration of grief based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell. Erica Whyman, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directs, with set design by Tom Piper, lighting design by Prema Mehta, music by Oğuz Kaplangi, sound design by Simon Baker, choreography by Ayse Tashkiran, and fight choreography by Kate Waters.

The Hamnet play premiered in Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon, in April at the Swan Theatre. Returning cast members Madeleine Mantock (Blithe Spirit) and Tom Varey (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) play Agnes and William Shakespeare in Hamnet in the West End.

Come and see this heartbreaking exploration of how the loss of a child affects a family. Book tickets to see Hamnet in London on Box Office.
